Meanwhile most of the players got together and sought joint legal advice and formulated a strategy. There were several articles about the case in local papers where the players talked shit and the police looked like retards. The police were surprised by how vocal and unified we were. Our strategy was to ask for a procedure called "binding over" which is similar to probation in the US, but much softer. Basically we have to agree not to break the law for the next year, otherwise we owe HK$1000 which is US$130. The case can't be re-opened, we'd just have to pay fines. Each of us wrote a letter to the prosecutor. The prosecutor and police did formally charge us but by the time our court dates came around they were on the defensive legally and in the media so they agreed to do the binding over.
Our court dates finally came up, they are processing about 15 people a day for 3 weeks straight. My court date was today. We all pleaded not guilty, then had to wait in a room and sign a paper admitting a set of facts as written out by the police. The facts were grossly inaccurate but if all you have to do is sign and then you get to walk away from the whole thing who's not going to take that offer? The whole thing took 2 hours, I paid nothing, I have no record and I got my bail money back.
I never took this that seriously, but it is a relief not to have it hanging over my head anymore. | | | | |
How ironic would it have been if you got thrown into the clink, only to find yourself playing cards all day? It's good to see that government is incompetent just about everywhere. Congrats, now go hit the tables!

will your arrest on charges of illegal gambling cause you to lose your ability to practice law?
(and better to keep you identity on DD secret, you could be hauled up on moral terpidute charges merely by being involve here)

LOL no as I have no record. Even a conviction probably wouldn't. However there were two customs officers playing that night who lost their jobs over it.
