Hey everyone, this is my first post. I've been really impressed with the strategy discussion in this forum, and I had a question of my own. I play a lot of shorthanded limit hold'em (3/6 to 15/30) and this situation constantly comes up:

You hit top pair. You bet and get called. On the turn an overcard comes, bet again and get raised. You call and the river is a blank. Do you fold?

I understand that this is very context dependent, but that is part of my question. What conditions do you need to call or fold here? Obviously if your opponent is a constant bluffing maniac it's unfoldable. What about if there was a draw on the flop or turn, creating the possibility of a turn semi-bluff raise? Does anyone have a requirement for how good their initial top pair would have to be to call (for example, a pair of kings with an ace turned negating the overpair possibility that would exist on a 2589 board, or an ace kicker negating the possibility that they raised the same pair on the turn for value)? Or does a ragged board make you more suspicious that they're bluffraising or raising a lower pair for value when you raised preflop? If it was a checkraise does that added strength make it an automatic river fold?
Playing live I would be inclined to fold most of the time in these situations, but online people are much more aggressive, especially shorthanded. I hope people find this question interesting because I'm chock full of lack of knowledge about the game I play professionally and have lots more I'd love to discuss. Thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to respond!

From 3/6 to 15/30 is a pretty huge range ...

I'm not playing any higher than 8/16, and only live, so take this for what it is worth.

The decision comes down to pot odds, and that is dictated by the size of the pot. How many bets are in the pot by the turn? And is your question assuming you are heads up on the turn?

For me, the decision between check/call and check/fold on the river with TP after a raise on the turn comes down to a combination of hand strength, the villian, board texture, and pot size. If the pot is large enough, I'll call pretty light on the river, as I only have to be good X times out of 100 to make the call profitable. That said, there are certainly some players who I know (or at least believe to be) such rocks that they aren't raising with anything less than the nuts, and if I'm facing a river bet, that's an easy fold.

So yeah, it depends. :cool
