Cable Modem configuration

Now I'm sure this probably isn't possible or people would do it all the time and I would be able to find a tutorial on it, but I figured I'd ask anyways. Here is the backstory...

So I called my ISP today which is the local cable company and asked if it would be possible to have my upload speed upped even if I had to pay a fee. They basically told me I could only get the upload speed offered through their packages. The packages are (down/up): 10/1, 20/1.5, and 30/3. I would be find with the 30/3, but that service isn't offered in my area yet.

Now to the question. I know when you upgrade they send a signal to your modem and I'm guessing all that does is reconfigure the modem. I currently have the 20/1.5, but I'd like to have more like 18.5/3. Is it possible for me to reconfigure the modem myself from my computer?

I think people used to have cable modem uncapping kits way back in the day but I havent heard of anyone doing it lately.

Is Fios available in your area? They have MUCH better upload speeds, my connection is 35mb/35mb.

Yeah you have the standard plan which is still very fast. The increased upload speeds over cable is very noticeable when you're uploading files. I backup 150GB of my important media to an offsite backup so this is why I went for the 35/35 plan. It's also important to note that this speed is constant, not just temporarily boosted like cable just to get impressive test speeds. After 20secs the cable speed gets cut in half.

QoS bandwidth limits are often done at the switch based on your modem's macid, so no, you can't always hack your way to higher bandwidth.

I don't have fios or u-verse as an option in my area. Just another reason for me to hate Cincinnati.
