Getting a sponsorship from his dad's company when he clearly was less accomplished than all the other pros would have reinforced every perception that he was trying to run away from: that the cub can only be successful with the papa bear around.

It may be hard to believe, I guess, but its pretty much exactly what he used to say, and it makes a shitload of sense. He took the UB job for a few reasons. One was that nobody else was really calling at the time, but another main reason was because it allowed Joe to play the part of Hero, Poker Community Good Guy, and to finally become Joe Sebok, as opposed to Joe Sebok, Barry's kid.

Pretty sure that UB offers more than Stars and Tilt, which is why people are signing with them.

For example, Maria Ho would have definitely gone with Stars or Tilt (and avoided the negative UB stigma) had they offered something comparable.

I think that UB offered Joe something pretty generous (because of Poker Road and his million twitter followers), and he jumped at it. The "hero" routine seemed to be his way of publicly rationalizing it, and it wouldn't surprise me if this was suggested by stepdad Barry. The whole thing obviously backfired because he promised things that he should have known he could never deliver because UB wouldn't let it happen. I think that Joe was living in the moment, though, and believed anything UB told him in order to get his hands on the money. Once he was entrenched, he was never going to give it up, which is why he didn't leave as promised when UB shit the bed.
