Chances are it was backers money. Actually, I never leave money in the hotel safes anymore that just have a code in them. There are obviously master codes that the maids most likely know to unlock them should a customer leave with it locked. It may or may not "log" that somewhere. And if the maid is working with security, then the log of that event could be erased. Moral of the story: dont use them.
