Wasn't it marketed as the suburban version of Kids, where they sniff glue instead of drink 40s.
The setting is white-trash country, not suburbs.
It's been a long time, but I recall the movie being disturbing. One disturbing scene after another.
Give it a shot. The movie does seem to have a cult following of some sort.

its an art film, and a very unpleasant one.
it fails on many many levels but that doesnt really invalidate it much since its clearly devoid of any real agenda or aspirations.
as a nihilist snapshot of middle america's toxic and starving underbelly, its just about perfect.

I saw it about 10 years ago, I thought it was good has a girl who is hot but is bald I think in this movie? I don't remember, but yeah it's fucked two kids that hunt cats to sell for asian food and huff glue with the profits. Never forget the adults in the kitchen fighting a chair and they are all into it.

I wasn't big on the movie kids, not like pissed off at the ending, but I just feel the movie really failed on so many levels. A lot of people I know said they took it as an eye opening movie about how kids are without parents around, but it was so ridiculous over the top at times.
I haven't seen this movie, but I probably won't because it looks like it was trying too hard to be artistic.

i used to hang out in washington square park and skate in the early 80s. the movie Kids was in no way shape or form over the top. its funny how people who didnt know that crowd consider it exploitive, and yet the people who were around then understand that not only was it not in the slightest bit exaggerated, but that a bunch of the "actors" were not even actors, but literally people from the scene who got cast as themselves.

Yeah, all of the extras were basically playing themselves. Many of people in that movie are dead, on drugs and/or in/out of jail. I donated $10 to Harold Hunter's funeral a few years back when he passed away of "natural causes" at age 32.

Saw it 3-4 yrs ago, its a "wtf" movie.
It is pretty "WTF". My friend brought it over to watch at my place. Cable wasn't hooked up yet so I said "sure, put the movie in". We were watching it when his girlfriend came by to pick him up. She walks in and see us watching Gummo and says "Oh, Hell no I'm watching this again" steps out the door and just leaves him at my place. I don't know what her issues with the movie are exactly but she was certainly not pleased that her boyfriend like the movie. There are some fucked up parts like the guy who was pimping out his down syndrome sister. Oh yeah and the gay dwarf. Not a good movie but not the worse.

Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

This is a weird fucking movie but a bit entertaining. It was shot in Xenia Ohio which is about an hour north of Cincinnati which is 20 min from me. A major tornado went thru the town in the 80s and fucked everything up. Make sure to watch the interview with the guy who produced it and youlll understand why it is so weird. I think all of the actors were plucked off the street in Xenia. Enjoy!
