Handicapper Adam Meyer gives 49ers the edge
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 1MSC2I.DTLWhen asked about his epic, game-winning catch last Saturday, the 49ers' Vernon Davis said, "In big-time games, big-time players make big-time plays."
I guess that's true when it comes to gambling, too.
Adam Meyer is one of the better-known gamblers in Las Vegas. By the time the 49ers and Giants kick off their NFC Championship Game today, he plans to bet more than $2 million on the outcome.
And who's the $2 million man picking? The 49ers.
"My total investment in the game will be in the neighborhood of $2.1 million," said Meyer, who lays most of his bets at the M Resort and the Wynn. "I like S.F. to win the game in a very low-scoring affair."
Technically, the 39-year-old gambler said he plans to put $1.5 million down on the 49ers to win. He'll most likely be giving the house 2 or 2 1/2 points, although he thinks the line could drop to 1 1/2 points by game time.
Beyond that, Meyer said he will also bet $600,000 on the "under," which stood at 42 on Saturday. That means gamblers are betting on whether the total points scored in the game will be "over" or "under" that number. (Meyer actually bet the under early, putting $400,000 on an under of 43 points and $200,000 on an under of 42.5 points. He says don't bet the under if it drops below 42.)
Now, I'm not a big proponent of gambling. There's a reason those casinos in Vegas are so fancy.
But a guy like Meyer takes his business seriously - and studies the game scientifically. As the proprietor of Adamwins.com, a handicapping operation that says it generates $10 million in bets on any given Sunday, the man lives and breathes analysis. Remember that movie "Casino," where Robert De Niro plays the genius Vegas handicapper? That's Meyer.
He burst onto the gambling scene over 20 years ago as an 18-year-old in Florida. Working an internship at a small sports handicapping company, he started winning at a better clip than all the old-timers.
So he started his own company and embarked on a career that resulted in him becoming one of the best-known handicappers in the country. In addition to regular stints picking games on KNBR in the Bay Area, he made national news last fall when he bet $100,000 on the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series ... before the playoffs started. When the 15-1 longshot came home, Meyer cleared nearly $1 million after accounting for various hedges he made over the course of the baseball postseason.
So why is he so high on the 49ers? He knows the team extremely well and says he has won about 80 percent of his 49ers bets over the past four seasons.
Here are his three main points of analysis:
-- San Francisco is one of the only teams in the NFL that can pressure the quarterback without blitzing. That's the only time Eli Manning really struggles. He kills teams that blitz a lot.
-- Field goal kickers and field position will play a big role, and no one plays that game better than the 49ers.
-- He believes Frank Gore will have a very big game, proving to be the difference in the end.
"I'm predicting a low-scoring game, 20-13 or 20-16," he said.
For what it's worth, Meyer said he bet over $1 million on the 49ers last weekend, too.
