Brief history... I used to be very much into golf. From the time I was a little kid up until around 18 I played a ton. I was junior champion at a big country club in PA 2 years in a row, and also spent 3 summers at Kiski Golf School back in the day. At 16 I was hitting 300 yard drives, I say this not as a brag or anything, just to give an idea of what kind of swing I have. Around 18 years old I stopped playing regularly. Reason being was the game just got too frustrating for me, and I was also into a lot of other things outside of golf, and just never had the time. I played here and there, but obv lost a lot of my game. I still have a very good swing, although I am certain I have to work on it a ton, but the base is still there. I am sure my balance, back swing and follow through need a ton of work, as well as my short game and putting, but that will all fall into place with a lot of practice. One of my biggest issues for the last 10 or so years is that I shank the shit out of my drivers. I can hit a 3 wood perfectly off the tee still, but put a driver in my hand and I will send it 3 fairways over to the right, so I am thinking I need an extra stiff shaft (huh-huh) on my drivers. Does this sound correct? I am thinking I have too much force on my downswing and the club is not catching up with anything less than a stiff shaft. Problem for me is now I am playing with the same clubs I had 20+ years ago and really don't have a grasp as to what is out there now... To give you an idea of how long it's been... metal drivers were just getting popular around the time I was playing a lot. I have hit a few in the past years (mostly Big Bertha's) here and there, but when I play I still am using an old wooden wood. What I really need here are suggestions on which clubs would be the best deal for me at this point, where to buy, what brand of clubs and what types of shafts I should get... Any other suggestions are welcome as well

I like your new name...lol. I ended up doing that too (aiming left) but that really is no way to play if you are going to be serious about the game. I have to correct that problem if I am going to start playing a lot again.

I don't really want to get into it but I have a very extensive golf history. Don't aim left. Like you said you need to correct the problem and without seeing your swing the first thing I would say is to work on getting your hands through as quick as possible. One problem that occurs when you get tired and not in "golf shape" especially with drivers is that your hands don't get through quick enough causing the club face to be open when you hit it. Try not hitting the ball very hard and just work on trying to literally roll your right hand over your left as you come through with your swing (if you are right handed).

Just don't get back into golf. Golf sucks. Don't believe me? Ask anyone you know that plays a lot of golf and ask them if they played good the last time they played or if they are happy with their game currently. Heck, just ask them when they last time they "played good" was. No one in the world, except whoever just won the last tourney on the PGA is happy with how they are playing or satisfied with the current state of their game. You either always want to be as good as you once were or if you are at your peak skill level right now you want to be better. It is a never ending battle.
It is outrageously expensive and it is about to get insanely hot in Vegas.
My resolution: I am currently addicted to tennis. It is also somewhat frustrating, but not nearly as much. It is much cheaper and you also get in shape.
Also, tennis offers many more chances to compete with people than golf does. Golf is like you against the course and the course always wins, because there is always some shots you left out there. In tennis you compete against other people and it feels good to own someone's face. Even if you make mistakes in tennis you can still win and feel good about it. Golf is always, "that was my best round ever, but I still 3 putted twice!"

You're such a golf hater. I love to golf because I enjoy the opportunity to walk around in the fresh air, which I don't do nearly often enough. The problem is that you keep score. I'm not one of those hippy "everybody wins" people. In competitive sports, there is a winner and a loser. But golf doesn't have to be a competitive sport. It can be a leisurely activity if you just don't keep score. I had a very good round two rounds ago. I started out crappy, but then had some very good holes. And I don't give a shit about the third hole when I put 2 in the water. My last round was rough because I was playing a PGA quality course (TPC Summerlin) in 25 mph winds. Golf in Vegas doesn't have to be expensive. I play on several that are $30-$50. That's not cheap, but it's not overly expensive. It is going to get hot soon, but it's great now. I will sometimes start after 4pm when they cut the rates way down and just play until it gets dark. Vegas, I'll go to the driving range with you any time. The Callaway golf center across from Town Square mall is very nice. They often have 2 for 1 buckets for $10 and it's lit.

Yeah, can't go the tennis route, I never really liked the game. I'll always have a big spot for golf, my whole family has always been very much into it. My father was a scratch golfer for many years, and even up till the year he died was still shooting mid 70's to low 80's. Part of the reason I want to get back into it is because of him, he always bugged me to start playing again.

The flex in your shaft depends how fast your swing is. Do you know how fast it is or have a rough idea?

This is why I mentioned hitting 300 yard drives at a young age. I generate a lot of club speed, but it's more power than finesse. My arms aren't very long, so the I'm coming through on the downswing pretty fast, as opposed to someone who is long in the arms with a nice arching swing. I have no idea what the speed is though, I guess I am going to have to get that measured. I'm sure my swing needs a lot of work too, it's been over 20 years since I played a lot. There are definitely a lot of differences in my mechanics now due to age, body type, etc.. I went to the range last year though and when I hit it straight was still at the 275-300 yd mark.

Vegas, I suggest you call up some courses and find out when they have a fitting session on their range. The big manufacturers do this all the time for clubs. They have a shit tonne of clubs, all different shafts and a pro that will help you select what is right for your swing. It's also free, just show up and pretend you're a member.
If you hit a 9 iron 150 yds (proper trajectory) then you have a fast enough swing for stiff clubs.
When getting back into the game just keep everything simple. Don't bother working on the fade or draw. Just hit everything straight, and bump and run shit until you dial in your short game on the range. You will only lose a few strokes off your best handicap even after taking all that time off. Learning young gives you that advantage.

I like it, I will definitely look into that. Thanks! Good advice too, I will definitely be taking the "keep it simple stupid" approach for a while.

I feel you pain when it comes to not being able to control the woods. I had trouble hitting my irons last year and I went back to playing a set of old Tommy Armour 845s that I had back in high school and it worked wonders. I play a controlled draw with my irons but I have a wicked slice on my driver. Luckily I've gotten to where I can hit arounf 230 with a 5 iron so most par 4s I can tee off with the 5 and be within an 8 iron of the green.

Go pick up a bridgestone j33r 460 driver with a stiff or x stiff shaft(if you swing 110+) on eBay for cheap. Slow the swing down just a touch and let the club head catch up St the top and bottom of the swing. Problem solved. Possibly.....
